These pages explore the ideas that formed and continue to shape All at Sea. First formulated in Sail Against the End by Hervé Massard, the program primarily explores how art creates a reality out of the sea despite the lack of references. The program uses a scientific approach, with a defined object, method and result, in order to monitor the means of art as a mode of cognition.

The Object

All at Sea, an old English expression used to describe a disoriented state, introduces with a hint of humor the subject of this artistic research project – going to sea to grasp the idea of what the sea stands for by exploring what art can put into motion.

The Method

How does one recover the memory of a reality that is imposed on us yet instantly fades and reforms? How is it possible to make a representation of such a reality?
All at Sea proposes three conditions for answering these questions.

The Result

All at Sea wants to contribute to the initial question of how cognition reaches an operative Representation of Reality through the renewal, and thereby rendered possibility of a multiplicity of artistic positions, as well as the universality of art.
